PUBLIC MESSAGE #16 RE: COVID-19

July 14, 2020

Notice to all residents and business owners:

It’s been two weeks now since Governor Northam initiated Phase 3 of his plan to ease COVID-19 restrictions.  Fortunately, state-wide we have not suffered the sharp spikes in cases other states have experienced.  This speaks to the vigilance of Virginians and our visitors.  We will continue to see life slowly return to normal only as long we continue to follow the commonsense precautions we have all come to know so well.

As for Cape Charles locals, we’ve got this.  Most of our residents are respectful and compliant with these safety protocols.  But since regionally there has been a significant increase of cases just across the bridge, what can really help keep us safe, is for owners of short-term rentals to continue urging compliance by their guests.  So, the Town asks that anyone hosting visitors this season, please continue to provide the following reminders:

  • Bring your supplies with you, so we don’t over task the local grocery stores
  • Wash/disinfect your hands often and clean up after yourself, especially in public places
  • Maintain social distancing, especially in social settings
  • Be respectful to our beach attendants and follow their direction
  • Know that many business owners will refuse service if you’re not wearing a mask

Most people want to do the right thing, but it’s also helpful to reinforce what is expected.

Regarding Town operations, we were prepared to move to the next step in our Incident Operations Plan this week.  This would have been the first part of an incremental process to return to normal operations, which would have started allowing some limited access to Town facilities.  However, due to the current increasing trend in the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area, we are going to delay implementation until we see that tend start to reverse; stand by.

We hope everyone is having a great summer, despite what’s come; let’s do all we can to keep it that way.  Be good and stay safe!

John Hozey
Town Manager
